High Relief Wood Carving - A Time-Honored Craft
Welcome to the online gallery of James Atkin. Jim is a high relief woodcarver who lives on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada. He hopes that you will enjoy these unique woodcarvings as much as he loves to create them.
The art of carving in high relief requires very dense woods such as teak, padauk, and black walnut. This type of wood usually comes from exotic places and can be difficult to source. Excellent colour, grain and the quality are essential. When found it is beautiful but comes at a high price. The meticulous work itself takes many, many hours of drawing, preparing, carving, carving, carving and finally hours, sometimes days of sanding and finishing the piece. Each carving takes several months and even over a year from inspiration to completion.
